CISL Lunchtime Seminar: “The Profiteers: How Business Privatizes Profit and Socializes Cost” with Christopher Marquis

Details

Join us for a special Lunchtime Seminar to continue some of the important themes that arose in our inaugural Global Leadership Summit. For this session, CISL is honoured to host the launch of Chris Marquis’s new book, “The Profiteers: How Business Privatizes Profit and Socializes Cost”. Professor of Chinese Management at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, Chris challenges the foundations of corporate assumptions, revealing how businesses often profit at the expense of the public commons. During the event, hosted by our CEO Lindsay Hooper, Chris will discuss “The Profiteers” and how we can utilise the lessons from it across CISL and CJBS.

Book Overview: “The Profiteers” uncovers the hidden costs of doing business today. It’s not just about the bottom line; it’s about the impact on our environment, society, and individual lives. The main topics include:

  1. The Dark Side of “Free Lunch”:
    • Learn how businesses have thrived by externalising costs—whether it’s environmental damage, systemic racism, or low wages.
    • Understand the consequences of this profit-first mentality.
  2. A Regenerative Paradigm:
    • Beyond critique, “The Profiteers” offers hope. It introduces a new vision for tomorrow’s economy—one that prioritises sustainability, responsibility, and positive impact.
    • Explore stories of pioneers who are actively transforming the way business is conducted worldwide.

This is a special guest appearance, so please register your attendance here to attend, in-person or online, as this event will not be recorded but there will be a limited number of signed copies of the book to be given away on the day.
